Why I Believe Sexual Immorality is Wrong

Yesterday Ken and I were over in Duluth, MN celebrating our 17th Anniversary with a day of skiing. We had a fun day but near the end of the day I overheard a very sad conversation which got me thinking about what I wanted to write about today.

Towards the end of the day we were standing behind 4 fairly young guys in line for the ski lift and one guy very loudly started telling what he called a "great story", better then the time he was drunk and threw up in the heater vent at another ski resort and had to pay $300 in damages. Later he was like - "oh I guess I was shouting when I said all of that" as he had his ear buds in. Anyway - I doubt you want all the details of the story but the just of it was - the night before he had gotten so drunk (and possibly high) that he was about to pass out but still managed to drive over to this girl's house who thinks she is his girlfriend (a fairly new relationship which he doesn't intend to have last) and even in his drunk state he was able to do things "right" so that she was physically intimate with him. He was so proud of it and my heart was just aching for this nameless girl. I just want to cry out to all girls, and boys too, "YOU ARE WORTH MORE THAN THAT!" That isn't love - nothing even close! God designed sex to be a beautiful thing between a man and woman who are married and when you choose that way instead you are choosing heartache.

I am afraid that we have reached a time in history when there are many that have not truly read and studied God's word, nor have they had others teach them and I think there are some that truly don't know that God tells us not to have sex with someone that we are not married to. Working in the wedding industry as I do, I am saddened to find that the majority of couples live together (and I don't think it is platonically) before marriage. As much as the homosexual agenda is getting pushed as well I think before long we will have a lot of people who don't realize that God says that is wrong as well. That is why we need to truly read and try to understand our Bibles and then share God's word with others too. Let's search for TRUTH!

What does God truly say on this subject?

I am just going to give you quite a few verses so you can read for yourselves. I encourage you to look them up and read the context with them as well. God has a plan for everything. Things will go best when we follow His plan. Life becomes chaos when we don't.

"Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge. Hebrews 13:4

"Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters,  nor adulterers,  nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God." 1 Cor. 6:9-11

Thank God that even if this was a sin that we have struggled with we can change and be washed and no longer carry that guilt with us.

"Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body." 1 Corinthians 6:18

"For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God;" 1 Thess. 4:3-5

"For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God." Eph 5:5

“Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him. Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple  of the Holy Spirit who is in you, who you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
Romans 6:13-20

"Because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done." Romans 1:25-28

I think these verses are pretty clear. Adultery is talking about intercourse between two people that are not married to each other but at least one of them is married to somebody else, fornication speaks of unmarried people that are physically intimate and Homosexuality is between two people of the same gender. Sexual immorality basically covers them all. There are more verses that could be read and if you have questions on this topic I encourage you to really study on this topic and read more verses.

Meanwhile it is my prayer that the truth would truly be taught, that we would teach our children and make sure that we ourselves completely flee from immorality. Let's not even get close!! Then let's work at sharing the truth of God's love for all of us and His desire for us to follow in His way.

Truth.

My daughters tell me that even people who call themselves Christians are doing this. What is even more troubling is that people who also call themselves Christians, no matter what generation, are so accepting of it, in our family there has been a wedding after what you describe had gone on, and the usual results...and then later a wedding that everyone flocked to with the worldly works, everyone flocked to that wedding, but my daughter and son in law's wedding, where the first kiss was saved for the altar was actually ignored by many of these same relatives who attend church and talk the talk!

One older woman related to the groom said loud enough for the groom's parents to hear at my daughter's wedding after the first kiss, "That is way too old fashioned". I'm not meaning to whine at all, just sharing the contrast in attitude. It is unbelievable to us that fornication, uncleaness along with drunkeness is "Okay" with so many (even some church goers) when as you wrote, the Bible clearly tells how evil and dangerous it is.

Thank you for speaking out Abbi. Great job.

Thank you for sharing.

Last night I was sitting in the hallway at my daughter's (Christian) dance studio. We really love going there because the staff is Christian, they play wholesome music, and the children learn dance basics and perform in modest costumes. I would consider it a safe place and am so thankful for the older girls who are such a good example for my young daughter. Anyhow, one of the girls older sisters had come to class and was talking loudly on her phone in the hallway. She was exchanging high school gossip and then announced that a classmate had spent the day telling everyone that she is expecting a baby. This young lady gave vulgar details as to when/where/how this baby was conceived. The dance school director pulled her aside, asked her to hang up, and politely explained that we don't talk that way there. She also offered to meet with the young lady and her mother to discuss why those kinds of comments are not welcome to which the girl laughed mean laugh and went outside.

It was shocking to me that high school girls are talking about this so flippantly. That sexual immorality AND pregnancy are not the special things they should be.

Thank you for sharing your post today. Know that our family is praying, right alongside you, for our children, your children, and for all people to go against this worldly trend towards accepting and acting on sexually impure thoughts.

It is so encouraging to hear from others who are standing for the truth. Thank you!
